Unbalanced
2025
Unbalanced metaphorically reveals low birth rates and population imbalance through the unfamiliar form of a seesaw designed for one person. A seesaw, which typically requires two people to move, is reimagined by the artist as a static, silent sculpture, prompting reflection on the notions of “coexistence” and “relationship.” This familiar object, rooted in the premise of being “together,” becomes dysfunctional, and its imbalance evokes a sense of alienation.
This seesaw is intentionally designed with an asymmetrical weight, allowing it to move even when used by one person. Yet, its form ultimately speaks to an adaptation to the inability to “be together.” The twisted structure visually represents the complexity of today’s entangled realities. It reflects how low birth rates and demographic imbalance have become part of everyday lives, urging us to adapt and seek new possibilities. The empty seat on the seesaw is not merely a sign of absence but a metaphor for a social space where inclusion needs to be restored, like a blank canvas waiting to be filled.
